How do I Call Internationally Using Sprint Cell Phone Service?

Traveling with a Sprint GSM-compatible phone can be more expensive than buying a pay-as-you-go phone at your destination.

Sprint uses a technology called CDMA for calls. Most of the rest of the world uses a different technology, one called GSM. All Sprint cellular phones can call internationally using CDMA while you are in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some “International” Sprint phones can call and receive calls internationally using GSM while you are out of the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. How to call internationally with Sprint depends on where you want to call internationally from.

Step 1

Email Sprint customer service using the web-based email from on its website if you would like to make international calls from the United States, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. Your phone may be blocked initially, but all Sprint phones can make the calls by dialing “011” in front of the country code. For example, to call France after you’ve unblocked your phone you would dial “011” then “33” and then the number. If the number includes a leading zero, drop the zero.

Step 2

Choose the “Sprint International Long Distance” add-on if you will regularly be making international calls. The add-on reduces the per-minute costs because international calls are not included in domestic monthly plans. This add-on has a monthly fee.

Step 3

Buy a GSM-compatible phone from Sprint if you travel internationally and want to make international calls when out of the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Be aware that traveling with a Sprint GSM-compatible phone can be more expensive than buying a pay-as-you-go phone at your destination, particularly for local calls and data in your destination country.
